Hohenems Palace

Palast Hohenems

This palace is regarded as one of the most important Renaissance buildings in western Austria. Its construction dates back to Cardinal Markus Sitticus III of Hohenems, who later became papal legate at the Viennese Court and Bishop of Konstanz. At the beginning of the 17th century, the palace was extended under Count Kaspar of Hohenems. It was his reign which also oversaw the settlement of the Jewish community in Hohenems, as well as the founding of the first Latin school and the first printing press in Vorarlberg. The palace is now owned and lived in by the Waldburg-Zeil family: Countess Stephanie Waldburg-Zeil can even give a personal tour of the palace on request. There’s an on-site restaurant here too where you can experience top gastronomy in a medieval setting, including special culinary experiences at theme dinners or a traditional knights' dinner in the palace.
