Skyspace Lech

Skyspace Lech

Largely underground and barely noticeable from the outside, Skyspace Lech is nestled snugly amidst the high alpine landscape of the Lechquelle Mountains. In 2018, the contemporary American artist James Turrell created a work of installation art at 1,780 metres above sea level, part of a series of over 60 fascinating light space creations worldwide.

Mountains are at the nexus of heaven and earth, something one particularly notices at sunrise or sunset. In the bunker-like Skyspace Lech, the transitions between night and day are artificially intensified, creating a play of light which seduces the viewer into quiet contemplation and a meditative mood.

During twilight, the walls are bathed in an array of colours. This gives the sensation of the sky, visible through the dome, seemingly being absorbed and becoming part of the space you’re in. In dry weather, the Skyspace dome is open during the day. In bad weather, the dome remains closed and the room is illuminated with a special light programme by James Turrell. Guided tours are offered for groups in the morning, evening and various times during the day.
