World-class architecture

Vorarlberg builds differently: modern and exciting, yet nestling perfectly into the timeless landscapes of its towns and villages.

Vorarlberg’s architecture has long been highly regarded by industry experts. Hardly any other region in Europe possesses such a great density of high-quality new buildings in all areas. From hotels to fire stations, kindergartens to museums, residential buildings to municipal offices, all impress with their unique architecture, designed using clear lines  and natural materials. In rural areas – the Bregenzerwald, for example – wood from local forests is the preferred building material – usually untreated timber. Sun, wind, and rain change the material’s colour to grey and even a dark brown over the years.

Many of the newer structures are also ahead of the game when it comes to saving energy. Ever more passive houses are being built, and solar panels and photovoltaic systems are a default choice for many homeowners.

In the company of local experts, this journey will take you to several hand-picked examples of contemporary construction. Along the way you’ll discover all about the history of architecture in Vorarlberg and current developments.
